Weathersmart vs Tyvek – What Is the Best House Wrap?

How do builders and contractors choose the best house wraps when there are several options in the market today? Most house wraps tend to be weather-resistant barriers designed to shield the sheathing from moisture and air intrusion into the house wall system. We will be conducting a house wraps comparison. This will be between Weathersmart and Tyvek house wrap brands.

When evaluating the performance of these two house wraps, we considered several crucial factors. These characteristics included sturdiness, airtightness, vapor permeability, and drainage

Weathersmart House Wrap Overview

With an intelligent housewrap solution that provides the optimal balance between water intrusion protection and moisture vapor breathability, Weathersmart marks a new generation in housewrap technology. It can be utilized in any climate and behind most exterior claddings.

The end product is a polymeric weather-resistant barrier that uses a monolithic non-perforated covering of smart polymers on top of a high-strength nonwoven substrate. Its distinctive design provides weather resistance while being incredibly strong and UV stable.

What are the Features of this House Wrap?

●  Excellent symmetry between water permeability and resistance

●  Exceptional tolerance to UV and surfactants

●  Long exposure times and exceptional rip resistance for all-season performance

●  Surpasses air barrier code specifications

Some weathersmart products include: HardieWrap, HardiePlank, HardiePanel, and HardieShingle.

Tyvek House Wrap Overview

Non-perforated, non-woven, high-density polyethylene fibers are bonded to form a uniform web to create Tyvek HomeWrap, a product of DuPontTM. The web produces microscopic pores that block the passage of air and water while allowing vapor to pass through.

What are the Features of this House Wrap?

  • Tyvek is applied over the open stud framing and sheathing, which reduces the need for additional materials.
  • Tyvek permits exterior cladding (weatherboard lap) at window heads and other structural openings.
  • Tyvek is sold in rolls that overlap at the seams to keep water out of the construction.

House Wrap Durability

A strong house wrap can withstand handling and installation without breaking, which would reduce the effectiveness of its durability and water-resistance level. The tensile strength, surfactant resistance, cold, ultraviolet (UV) rating, and other durability criteria. The UV rating indicates how long a house wrap will stay intact when fully exposed to the sun. Both Weathersmart and Tyvek have good durability.

The cold resistance test standard which both products have undergone establishes whether the house wrap will shatter at reduced temperatures.

These house wraps can resist surfactants and are essential to their long-term longevity. Surfactants are impurities (such as oils and soap) that lower a liquid’s surface tension, preventing it from penetrating farther into the wrap material.

House Wrap Water Resistance

A wrap must keep water out of the house wall assembly as a critical need. Some products by Weathersmart house wraps are only allowed to employ a few water-resistance testing criteria that are allowed by the ICC-ES.

The most rigorous test, hydrostatic pressure, places extremely high forces on a wrap via a water column. Water Hydrostatic Pressure Test, AATCC Test Method 127.

The Water Ponding test measures the Tyvek house wrap’s ability to withstand a 1-inch “pond” of water after a few hours. The Boat Test, which is the least criteria, is used for paper and felt wraps of both products. It does not function with plastic house coverings because it is sensitive to vapor and humidity transfer. The Dry Indicator Method is a Test Method for the Water-Resistance of Paper, Paperboard, and Sheet Materials.

House Wrap Drainage

Drainage is a practical way to reduce rain-induced moisture intrusion into the wall assembly. To withstand large amounts of water, the design of a house wrap should include an integrated gap and a drainage plane. Both Weathersmart and Tyvek have good drainage.

House Wrap Vapor Permeability

The quantity of vapor transmission a wrap allows over time is measured by its vapor permeability (in US perms). Perms are measured using the Test Method for Vapor Transmission of Materials. A high perm level indicates that the wrap is highly permeable to vapor. However, it must not be so high that moisture cannot enter the house wall system from the outside.

The best perm for effectively balancing the outside and inside flow of moisture in a house wall system is between 15 and 20 perms, according to Joseph Lstiburek from the Building Science Corporation.

House Wrap Energy Saving

Many homeowners choose house wrap as their product of choice to lower home energy use and enhance the indoor atmosphere. Lightweight synthetic material, “housewrap,” is used to seal air leaks, water infiltration, and moisture intrusion in residential and commercial structures.

Water vapor can travel from the interior to the exterior of house wrap, which is thin yet durable and resists rot and mold growth. It fills in the tiny gaps and fissures in siding joints, acting as a water- and air-tight barrier to improve a home’s comfort and energy efficiency.

House Wrap Air Resistance

The air resistance of a house wrap is a continuous system that prevents air from moving through the building envelope. The air resistance of house wraps is measured using different techniques. The Air permeability and resistance of these house wraps are top-notch. You can’t go wrong with Air resistance when dealing with these wraps.

House Wrap Price

Installing weathersmart house wrap for a 500-square foot basic project may be done for between $1.24 and $1.49 per square foot*. Tyvek’s price for a 500-square foot ranges between $.26 and $1.50; the job’s conditions and options will determine the actual costs of these house wraps.

How to Choose the Right House Wrap for Your Home?

A high-performing house wrap has the ideal ratio of vapor permeability and vapor and water resistance to stop air and moisture infiltration. It must be sturdy enough to withstand harm both before and after construction. When choosing a house wrap, consider these factors before making purchases.
